Growing a furnace business in Manitoba

Manitoba combines a very long heating season with active heat-pump programs. For a furnace company, that's a chance to add heat pumps as a second line, using Efficiency Manitoba rebates that are clear enough to market accurately.

Manitoba gives a furnace company two things at once: a long heating season and a clear path into heat pumps. Winters are long and very cold, and the heating season is among the longest in southern Canada. At the same time, Efficiency Manitoba runs heat-pump rebates that are specific enough to promote accurately. That combination makes Manitoba a natural place to add a second product line.

Furnace.Business works with Manitoba heating companies from Vancouver. We're a marketing and consulting service, not an HVAC contractor; we don't install, repair or service anything.

The Manitoba furnace market

Manitoba's heating mix is more varied than its Prairie neighbours'. Statistics Canada reports that in 2023, 52% of Manitoba households heated mainly with natural gas and 33% mainly with electricity.

That gives a furnace company two distinct audiences:

  • Gas-heated homes: the core furnace replacement and maintenance market, and candidates for a cold-climate heat pump alongside the furnace.
  • Electrically heated homes: homes with electric furnaces, baseboards or electric boilers, which may qualify for heat-pump programs and are less likely to need a gas furnace.

Winnipeg holds most of the market, with Brandon, Steinbach, Winkler, Portage la Prairie and Thompson as other centres. Winnipeg is competitive enough that service-area targeting and reviews matter; smaller centres reward visibility and reputation.

Seasonality and the business year

With one of the longest heating seasons in southern Canada, furnace demand carries much of the year. The valley is short, but a short valley with no plan still means idle crews.

  • Fall to spring: furnaces lead. Keep replacement, emergency and financing messages sharp.
  • Late winter: a good moment to introduce heat pumps to past customers, before spring.
  • Summer: heat-pump installs, cooling work and maintenance visits fill the gap if they've been marketed early.

Programs relevant to the off-season, as of October 2026

Manitoba has some of the clearest heat-pump support in Canada. Confirm each with the administrator before advertising.

  • The Efficiency Manitoba Air Source Heat Pump Rebate lists $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate air-source heat pump and $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences. Registered suppliers receive a $100 bonus for applications that include an F280 heat-load calculation before 2027-03-31.
  • The Affordable Home Energy Program offers a free heat pump to qualifying homes heated by electric furnace, baseboards or electric boiler, installed by registered program contractors. Eligibility details weren't re-confirmed when we checked.
  • Manitoba was the first province with a CGHAP agreement, announced 2025-09-12, delivering no-cost retrofits including heat pumps for low- to median-income households through Efficiency Manitoba.
  • Oil-heated Manitoba homes can no longer apply to the federal Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program, whose intake here ended on 2026-07-31.

For a furnace company, the centrally ducted rebate is the obvious marketing hook: most gas-furnace homes already have ducts.

How we'd market a Manitoba furnace business

  1. Add ducted heat pumps as a second line. Build a full page explaining how a cold-climate heat pump works with an existing furnace, with the Efficiency Manitoba rebate linked and dated.
  2. Talk to past furnace customers in late winter. With consent, offer heat-pump assessments ahead of spring.
  3. Sell maintenance on every visit. A maintenance plan keeps customers returning and fills summer weeks with tune-ups.
  4. Promote financing for larger jobs. A licensed lender's program helps with heat-pump and furnace-plus-heat-pump jobs; see our financing promotion service.

Frequently asked questions

What heat-pump rebates can Manitoba furnace companies promote?

As of October 2026, Efficiency Manitoba listed $2,000 for a centrally ducted cold-climate air-source heat pump and $1,500 for ductless, in existing primary residences. Link the official page, add the date, and tell customers to confirm eligibility.

Does the F280 bonus matter for marketing?

It matters for your operations more than your ads. Efficiency Manitoba lists a $100 bonus to registered suppliers for applications with an F280 heat-load calculation before 2027-03-31. If you're registered, it's worth building into your process.

Who licenses gas work in Manitoba?

In Manitoba, gas permits and gas tradesperson licences come from the Office of the Fire Commissioner, under The Gas and Oil Burner Act. We link it for reference only; we don't give compliance advice.
